comedy I admire

  • Anything Maria Bamford. An especial favorite is her 2012 Maria Bamford: The Special Special Special!, a comedy special shot in her living room with her parents as the two audience members. I’ve also been enjoying her new TV series, Lady Dynamite, which is autobiographical and gets stronger with each episode.
  • Jim Gaffigan‘s 2012 special, Mr. Universe, is pretty amazing. With his stand-up in general, I’m fascinated by his use of his audience voice to portray what the audience might be thinking as he performs and how he responds to that voice with the same voice. Makes no sense and yet it does.
  • Ali Wong‘s 2016 Netflix special Baby Cobra is a new favorite. She is seven and a half months pregnant but aside from an opening joke about having to go the bathroom in 10 minutes, she doesn’t do any pregnancy jokes until about halfway into her 75-minute set. In reference to the special, Marc Maron says, “She has huge balls.” Well put, Mr. Maron.
  • Jim Jefferies‘s 2014 special Bare is smart and crass, and I love it. As an Australian, his thoughts on American gun control are spot-on.
  • Mitch Fatel‘s carefully crafted stage persona of a sexually naive boy in a man’s body is hilarious. His 2004 special, Miniskirts and Muffins, is one of my favorites.
